So much for the spirit of bi-partisanship in Washington, D.C.  It seems that all we heard out of the Democrats since the Florida recount was how President Bush needed to come in to Washington ready to compromise.  According to Congressional Democrats, Bush failed to get a voter mandate so somehow this should be reflected in his policy-making coming out of the gate.  Bush ended up stealing their thunder shortly afterward by naming the most diverse Presidential Cabinet in American History.  Now, before the new President even puts his hand on the Bible, the Democrats have officially broken the bi-partisan pledge by unleashing Murder, Inc. on Linda Chavez.

It was widely speculated that the so-called “willingness” of Democrats to compromise with Republicans was somewhat disingenuous, but it was not predicted that they would strike so soon.  Linda Chavez is the target of a rumor that she harbored an illegal alien in her home in the early 1990’s.  The reality is that Chavez has had shown a pattern over the years of taking in needy minorities and helping them get on their feet and become independent.  Even though Linda Chavez is a conservative Republican, her commitment to humanity and helping those in need regardless of ethnicity or citizenship could make her the poster child for everything that Democrats claim to be.  The problem is that she isn’t a Democrat, so they must destroy her.  Many would ask why the Democrats would have an incentive to attack someone who has actually walked the walk when it comes to helping minorities.  The answer is simple.  By helping the young illegal alien find a job and establish citizenship, she is keeping another person off the federal welfare rolls, and ultimately depriving Democrats of one more vote on Election Day.

In a Tuesday afternoon press conference, Chavez, flanked by her family and several people she had aided over the years, withdrew herself from consideration to be the next U.S. Labor Secretary.  Perhaps the most admirable comment of the day was when Chavez claimed that if she were presented with the opportunity to take in the battered, needy Guatemalan woman, she wouldn’t hesitate to do it again.  When asked if she felt her case was similar to that of Zoe Baird, the former Clinton Nominee who’s nomination was killed when it was discovered that she had employed a domestic worker without paying taxes or social security, she vehemently denied any similarity.  She did comment, however, on the pattern in Washington over the last few years to practice the policy of personal destruction.

This marked the first victory for Murder, Inc. against the Bush Administration and it has now been uncovered who had specifically led the charge.  The lawyer of the witness against Chavez was Neil Eggelston, Clinton’s former White House Counsel.  During his time at the White House, Eggleston worked closely with George Stephanopoulos, who now works at ABC, the network that first reported the Chavez troubles on Sunday.  Stephanopolous was even the first to publicly predict that Chavez would not survive the nomination process.  Murder, Inc. is so pompous that they don’t even bother to cover their tracks when they do a hit.   Now that they have scored their first casualty, it is certain that they will now turn their sights on Attorney General designate John Ashcroft.  In the meantime, we’ll all be sure to tune in for the next episode of  Murder, Incorporated.
