According to sources on Capitol Hill, Rep. Henry
Bonilla, R-Texas, is on deck to succeed Senator Phil Gramm.
Gramm has reportedly called a 2:30pm EDT news conference today to announce that he will not seek reelection.
Rep. Bonilla was elected to Congress in 1992 as the first Hispanic Republican from Texas. In 2000, Congressman Bonilla was selected by then Governor George W. Bush and the Republican National Committee (RNC) to serve as
co-chairman of the 2000 Republican National Convention.
Senator Gramm will join Senator Jesse Helms of North Carolina among Republican Senators announcing their intent to not seek reelection. This would seem to make the task of
retaking the Senate in 2002 even more difficult for Republicans.
