Death of Outrage:
Bill Clinton and the Assault on American Ideals
by William J. Bennett |
Don't look for President Clinton's picture in The Book
of Virtues; bestselling author and former Secretary of Education William J. Bennett
considers Bill Clinton uniquely unvirtuous. In the wake of the White House intern sex
scandal, Bennett accuses Clinton of crimes at least as serious as those committed by
Richard Nixon during the Watergate imbroglio. Rising above anti-Clinton polemics, The
Death of Outrage urges the American public--which initially displayed not much more than a
collective shrug--to take issue with the president's private and public conduct.
Clinton should be judged by more than the state of the economy, implores Bennett. The
commander in chief sets the moral tone of the nation; a reckless personal life and
repeated lying from the bully pulpit call for a heavy sanction. The American people should
demand nothing less, says the onetime federal drug czar. In each chapter, Bennett lays out
the rhetorical defenses made on Clinton's behalf (the case against him is "only about
sex," harsh judgmentalism has no place in modern society, independent counsel Kenneth
Starr is a partisan prosecutor, etc.) and picks them apart. He may not convince everybody,
but this is an effective conservative brief against Bill Clinton. --John J. Miller List Price: $20.00

The End of Utopia: Politics and Culture in an Age of Apathy
by Russell Jacoby |
Shelby Steele's first book, The Content of Our
Character, sparked outrage over its indictment of liberal American policies and attitudes
towards race. A Dream Deferred expands Steele's critique, comparing government
interventions (like affirmative action) to the most damaging practices of slavery and
segregation, Soviet Communism, and Nazi Germany.
While Steele zealously praises civil rights victories, terming the movement that
effected them "the greatest nonviolent revolution in American history (one of the
greatest in all history)," he concludes that a simultaneous outcome -- the
stigmatization of whiteness - has led to disaster. Shamed whites try to prove their
innocence through redemptive acts, according to Steele, and he has always disdained the
"moral self - preoccupation" of post-'60s white liberals, which "made them
dangerous to blacks--ready to give them over to an 'otherness' in which nothing is
expected of them." List Price: $24.00

Okay, let's be honest. Rabid fans of television and
radio commentator Rush Limbaugh won't like this book. Fans of left-leaning satirist Al
Franken, on the other hand, will probably love it. In Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot,
Franken takes on the conservative Right in a collection of essays in which the author's
own satire often plays straight man to the greater absurdities of political life.
In "One Giant Leap Toward Solving the Budget Crisis," Franken proposes cutting
Medicare expenditures and NASA expenses in one fell swoop by shooting the elderly into
space. "Just think how many more manned space operations NASA could undertake if they
didn't have to worry about getting the astronauts back." Al Franken's
humor is biting, dark, and angry--he takes no prisoners as he skewers the icons of the
Right, among them Gingrich, Dole, Phil Gramm and, of course, Rush Limbaugh. Rush Limbaugh
Is a Big Fat Idiot will make you laugh, but it might make you mad, too. And that's what Al
Franken is aiming for. |

constricting control of the conspira- torial machinations among the wealthy and powerful
that has run the world for far too long - including a point - by - point program for
radical reform of the income tax and a proposal to muzzle the Fed, which exerts

Ecological Disaster, Ethnic Hatred, Plague, and Poverty |
If satirists are at their best when tussling with
something they hate, then this is P.J. O'Rourke's master- piece. He clearly hates
government--and has hated it since before it was cool to do so--and for all the right
reasons, too: it's clumsy, inefficient, hypocritical, greedy, and arrogant. In other
words, it magnifies the faults of the poor saps who staff it. Parliament of Whores is the
humorist's howl of bitter laughter at the entire bloated, num- skulled mess taking aim at
the political parties, foreign policy, and more. List

Moral Politics takes a fresh look at how we think and
talk about political and moral ideas. George Lakoff analyzed recent political discussions
to find that the family - especially the ideal family--is the most important metaphor of
today. He looks at how conservatives and liberals link mor- ality to politics through the
concept of family and how these ideals diverge. A wake-up call to political pundits on
both the left and the right, this work re- defines how American think and talk about
politics. List Price: $14.95
