I picked this Associated Press story from one of my internet news sites about six o'clock this morning. By 9:00 a.m. it was the first topic on local talk radio. Tom Alciere, newly elected as a Republican legislator to the New Hampshire House of Representatives, advocates killing cops. And New Hampshire has no provision for recall of its legislators other than committing some crime that would also result in removal from office. It is noteworthy that this was Alciere's fourth try at election, and that he has previously been registered as a Libertarian and a Democrat. Apparently he has no strong political convictions other than those of a radical, a cop-hater and a candidate for an honorary Swastika. The New Hampshire House has 400 representatives. By comparison, Arizona, much larger in both area and population, has 90. We have some stupid legislators, but none to compare with Tom Alciere, for which we in Arizona are grateful. Here are some quotes Alciere gave to a local paper and that were subsequently picked up by the Associated Press. ``It's unfortunate that cops do make it necessary (to kill them) when they're waging a war on drugs, and I view cops as enemy officers.'' ``Nobody will ever be safe until the last cop is dead.'' Alciere went online and said he was elected by a ``bunch of fat, stupid, ugly old ladies that watch soap operas, play bingo, read tabloids and don't know the metric system.'' He has hate toward the police and contempt toward his constituents. The New Hampshire chairman of the state GOP stated that Alciere should resign. Alciere says he has no intention of resigning. One wonders what a "lawmaker" who hates law enforcement officers intends to do in a state house of representatives. Right now, he should have about 399 enemies in the New Hampshire House and if not, shame on them! What is even more surprising is the number of callers into Phoenix talk radio who expressed hostility toward the police in general. Yes, there are police officers who go awry, just as there are people in any job who are less than they should be. That doesn't mean we advocate killing the police or, for that matter, killing Alciere himself. It would be nice if he moved to ... oh, say, Afghanistan. As for the locals here who don't like the police, they will call 911 as quickly as any other citizen if someone starts firing at their house and families. It was just eight days ago as of this writing that seven people were killed in Massachusetts, the state south of New Hampshire. It was the police who subdued gunman Michael McDermott after he opened fire and killed innocent people. Was that grounds for killing the police according to Tom Alciere? It seems we need some re-education in the United States, because this anarchistic attitude on the part of too many people (even ten people is too many in my opinion) is the political climate in which Swastikas will be raised or civil violence will become a way of life in what once was the land of the free and the home of the brave. Somewhere our culture is spawning attitudes characteristic of Hitler or, in our own day, Osama bin Laden ... a culture of hate. Every era has its share of nuts, but America seems to be developing into a squirrel cage! George W. Bush, the president-elect, has his unifying work cut out for him, but we all have to remember that whackos have no regard for law, unity, order or self-restraint. Only civilized people can create a civilized society. In the meantime, condolences to New Hampshire. © Dorothy Anne Seese, 2001 Today's featured
